Star Gazed (measuring 11" by 48") was design for the "Museum Challenge Exhibition" presented by the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands, CA. The museum graciously allows the Embroidery Guild of America (Inland Empire Chapter) to hold their monthly meets within the building, in exchange for participating in a yearly exhibit. Each year the museum selects a dozen antique textiles including woven items, beading and embroidery, for participates to create a new design inspired by one of the textiles. I selected a metal mesh purse circa 1910. The "challenge" was to have the new piece fit within a 10 inch cube display square. Thus the design (81/2 inches by 10 inches) fits within the cube, and the remaining scarf length was folded to fit within the required space.
Hand embroidered in pearl cotton using the satin stitch, stem stitch, long and short stitch, bullion stitch, and coral stitch.
